The Hungarian born artist Orsi Cowell-Lehoczky lives and works in London. Her formal education includes a diploma in professional photography, a degree in graphic arts, then an MA in screen printing at the University of Fine Arts, Budapest – Hungary. She spent 10 years travelling, living and working abroad. She lived in Romania, Greece, Switzerland and Egypt before settling down in the UK.
Orsi’s work is inspired by the visual legacy of the Avantgarde: works heavily laden with symbolism, irony and drama. She is working primarily with oil and acrylic. As she has never been able to abandon her earlier interest in the more graphical approach, line drawing still has an important role in her work. Her unique, often funny interpretations of the mundane increasingly present in her recent pictures.
“The ever-changing environment has had a great impact on my life and my way of looking at things. Although my pictures usually involve ‘close ups’ of my surroundings, they often carry quite an abstract and symbolic meaning that occurred to me during the process of painting. I hope to give some depth to my virtual snapshots by applying a private freedom upon my subject, creating a special figuralism.”
Orsi has also been a member of the Association of Hungarian Creative Artists (MAOE) since 1999.
