wax gestural model of Emmeline Pankhurst
Hazel’s striking vision – “Rise up, women” – for the Emmeline Pankhurst statue, captures the courage, determination and dignity of this extraordinary activist, as she calls on women in the crowd to rise up and demand their right to vote.

The shortlisted sculptors were asked to summarise their maquettes in just one sentence. The above, is mine.

It is rare to see women portrayed in public statues, even rarer for the statue to show a woman in action. Here Emmeline is an agent of change, caught mid-rousing speech, urging women from the 1900s and women of today, to rise up and demand justice.

I am excited that so many of you are able to join me for this unveiling. If you have already confirmed to me or Andrew Simcock, your place is secured (you should have received a letter of invitation to bring, from Andrew).

For others, I am afraid that the event is now full. But don't worry, I will schedule an email to go out at 3pm on Monday the 27th February, so everyone will see the final bronze "Rise up, women" maquette that afternoon.

I'm in great company - the other shortlisted sculptors are Amelia Rowcroft, Martin Jennings, Nick Roberson, Roxy and Steve Winterburn, and Sean Hedges-Quinn.

Above is a little teaser - photos of the wax gestural model of Emmeline Pankhurst that I used as part of my proposal for this commission. I have also been blogging about the process.
