Numerous private & corporate commissions

I primarily paint portraits and specialise in commissions of large heads in watercolour. I aim to create a strong, personal encounter between a painted subject and the viewer. My subjects often gaze straight out to help the “meeting” feel more real and increasing scale adds to the effect. My portraits represent a situation or thought which I hold onto while I paint.

My sitters often inhabit an area of single source, one-directional light, creating the drama of lost edges and “white-out” highlights. I use photographic notes to help me plot and accentuate light’s behaviour.

I paint wet-in-wet on a tilt with repeated washes. I take on occasional watercolour landscape workshops to share my techniques and demonstrate the behaviour of particles of pigment running and reacting together. The saturated colours in my work in Asia where colour suffuses life, from dress and architecture, to food and festivals.
